about

The 2014 seating of A Wicked Company bleeds off with a perpendicular shift as we embrace restless Sacto twilight shamans ✰Darlingchemicalia✰!

✰Dc✰ originally emerged in the late 1860’s as the shadowy insect menace of Ian Bone, an otherwise highly regarded inhabitant of Sacramento, California. Previous vinyl endeavors reflected Ian’s luminous apocalyptic loner grunt, as if Simon Finn was chewing his way through the menstrual night caves with only the serrated edges of the United Dairies catalogue to keep him warm. Not satisfied with this hermetic station, Ian’s emerging vision during the past three years mandated flesh on flesh, and so he enlisted the more wayward practitioners of Sacto’s contemporary dark arts. ✰Darlingchemicalia✰ as project: annihilator was born.

We first encountered ✰Darlingchemicalia✰ via a live session on Rick Ele’s Art For Spastics KDVS beacon in 2012, as the band was coalescing into its current fully realized form. Core members include Ian’s partner in marital dizz Stephine Bone on queasy keys, with G. Green’s Andrew Henderson augmenting the serpent mersh by way of a distinctly Quinic filigree. Every goddamn inch is reinforced with the death twirl fumage of Justin Gonzalez and Michael Feerick and the whole sh’bang feels like a bleaker version of the Chills at their frosty peak, the metallic clamor of da Gordons’ rhythm section welded on for added heft. ✰Dc’s✰ engorged hive of bristle, actualized as sweet nuisance, is finally ready: struggling, electric and chemical at 33 1/3.

What of these eleven songs though? So glad you asked, because we all know it’s not enough just to be able to play. These eleven odes to throbbing slouch have been scarring the right side of our brain for nearly a year and we can’t contain it one second longer!
As our man Alice Cooper once opined on an old mtv spot, “Yea, I get it, you’re angry. But where are the songs? Write the songs.” Amen Vince. Ian has written the songs. The first three cuts - wherein ✰Darlingchemicalia✰ barnstorm forth brazenly, guts spewing - are screaming dizbusters of howling luminosity and you’re like yea, I get this. But just as sure as Rat At Rat R is an anagram of Art Art Art, ✰Dc✰ then contort their bloody puckers in the service of eight unexpectedly sweet pop cheerios, all cotton candy pretties for you by any other name.

What we’re trying to say is these are bleak, ochre tinged melodic nuggets - songs within songs that are as beautiful and weird as any harmonic hidden referenced above: nauseous cries flowing into zombie surf confetti confessions. The most bubbly of these eleven tunes – musically speaking – is “Marijuana,” even though its opening salvo is "Suicide, suicide, suicide on your mom...suicide, suicide, suicide on the couch...” It stained our earholes but good. The only real residue of Ian’s previous incarnation as a cave folk loner is the final track “Anatomy,” in which our protagonist steps back into the abandoned mine, friends in tow, only to realize the spot where his sweetheart expired was just a hallucination of his own making. Gorgeous tune all the same. AS THEY ALL ARE.

If the reference points above exclusively hearken to a certain era, that’s cuz the geezers who run this label are of a certain vintage. ✰Darlingchemicalia✰ are very much denizens of their own gone vector. But everyone bleeds, right? At least we have that in common. Ten bucks gets you a taste.
